"Keep a Song in your Heart"

Steven Swanson was one of the founding members of the ASI Male Chorus in 1936. His membership in the Chorus spanned 72 years and four noteworthy conductors. Steve began with Thure W. Fredrickson (1936-1955.) He next sang with Professor Harold T. Bundin (1955-1970.) Edgar Eklof was the next conductor to serve with Steve (1970-2007.) Jeff Wressel became the conductor in 2007 and has since experienced the joy of working with Steve. They each discovered that Steve had a song in his heart.

Steve's tenure with the Chorus involved many concerts, and he enjoyed many Swedish American singing conventions. The ASI Male Chorus has photographs of Steve proudly marching in convention parades and singing in convention concerts.

One of Steve's favorite Male Chorus memories was when Prince Bertil of Sweden visited America in 1938. Prince Bertil drew a lot of attention in Minneapolis, and he stayed at the Pillsbury home on Lake Minnetonka.

To honor the the Prince, the Male Chorus rented a pontoon boat and floated out to the Pillsbury mansion. When they arrived at the Pillsbury home, the Chorus began to sing some favorite Swedish songs. Prince Bertil, his wife, and the Pillsbury family were surprised and gladly listened to the Male Chorus serenading them.

Not only was Steve the caretaker of many such stories, but he will also be remembered for his smile and for his friendly greetings, often in Swedish.

Steve loved his Swedish American heritage. He also loved his large extended family, his home, and his garden. He golfed into his late 90's and was active in his church until the very end. He will be missed by us all.
